The Wisconsin Infantry regiment was created on December 16, 1862 in Port Washington, Wisconsin as the 1st Regiment of Artillery. The regiment was mustered into service on January 8, 1863 and served until it was disbanded on May 3, 1865.
Port Washington is a small town in the Town of Appleton, Wisconsin on the Fox River. The population was 2,852 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Green Bay–West Allis metropolitan statistical area. The first port in what is now Port Washington was opened by Captain John Fisk and his partners on the upper Fox River in 1824. The town was named for General Nicholas Waite, who served as governor of New York from 1827 to 1830. General Waite's predecessor, Major-General Jonathan Harmar, had commanded an expedition against a band of Sioux Indians in 1814 near present-day Watertown, Wisconsin. In 1842, President James K. Polk sent United States Marines under Lieutenant Colonel John Prentice to protect American traders at Fort Snelling againstSioux attacks during the Dakota War of 1862. On April 20th of that year marines landed at Port Washington with stores and ammunition and began their operations against the Sioux. For three weeks they defended this important point against numerous hostile raids by the Sioux led by Sitting Bull (1863-1868). In 1865 General George Armstrong Custer attacked these same Sioux at Little Big Horn near here while commandeering a herd of buffalo for his cavalry unit known as "the Seventh Cavalry." After losing many men and horses he withdrew back across river to Fort Snelling where he arrived after dark on July 16th 1865 just before US forces burned down that fort after being relieved by British troops thirteen days earlier following a two week siege which had ended with Battle of Black Hills (April 14-May 6 1865) fought between Ulysses S Grant's army and Charles Fairchild's Texas Native American army under Chief Wounded Warrior tipi man Crazy Horse (1863-1924)].
