This created a demand for jobs in port management which led to the formation of a company that still operates today known as Packers Incorporated (PKI). Port Washington is a town located in the Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 9,871 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Racine–Waukesha–West Allis metropolitan area. The first settler in Port Washington was John Bannon in 1836. He and his family bought land from the federal government for $10 per acre. By 1840, there were twelve families living in Port Washington. In 1847, Rev. George Fenton founded a Methodist church here and it has been functioning continuously ever since. The first school was built in 1849 by Mrs. Lavinia Greenough and it was called "The Indian School." A new school building was constructed in 1903 and it is now used as the library/community center. The townspeople voted to make themselves an incorporated city on December 3, 1907 which they did on the condition that their city be known as "Port Washington." In 1933, racism led to discrimination against African Americans when unemployment rates were high due to World War II-related layoffs and rationing of goods essential for wartime production such as food stamps and housing assistance programs. This led to protests by local black residents who wanted their own schools, jobs and access to public services like water or electricity independent of white control. On February 16th of that year, over 100 people including some prominent community leaders marched into City Hall demanding change while holding up signs reading "All Is Not Lost Yet". After several days of talks between Mayor Haggerty (a white man) and various community members culminating with a vote by the Town Council authorizing incorporation into a city limits without further protest from black residents, race relations improved somewhat within Port Washington until violence broke out again two years later during another US war related strike caused by discrimination against soldiers returning home with military decorations
The town of Port Washington, Wisconsin was founded by the Dutch in 1795. The first settler in the area was Johannes de Valk, who arrived in 1797. The town grew quickly and soon became a major transportation hub for the region. In 1846, Port Washington was designated as the capital of Racine County. The town continued to grow and become a center for commerce and industry. By 1920, Port Washington had a population of over 10,000 people. It remained an important community until its decline in the early 21st century.
