Plover, Wisconsin is a small town located in Dane County, Wisconsin. The population was 905 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha metropolitan area. According to the United States Census Bureau, Plover has a total area of 362 square miles, of which 362 square miles is land and 0.8square mile (1.1 sq km) is water. The first Europeans to visit what is now Plover were Frenchmen who landed there in 1624 on behalf of King Louis XIII of France. They named the place after Pierre-Lachaise, an officer with the French army stationed in Canada during the Seven Years' War that lasted from 1763 to 1768. In 1836, when Plover was incorporated as a town by an act of the Wisconsin General Assembly, it had a population of only 8 people. In 1847 and 1848, settlers arrived from Michigan Territory via wagon trains and rafts called "Red River Gold Rush." During these years many new towns were formed along Red River; one being Waukesha (now Waukesha), which became known as "the most important center for western settlement on the Great Lakes." In 1850, when Plover's post office opened its doors for business first thing Saturday morning—a record at that time—it had a population of just four residents. A fire destroyed much of downtown Plover on November 10th 1886 which caused $4000 damage to businesses including two general stores and two breweries as well as fifty homes valued at $6000 each The cause was determined to be arson by three men who were caught because they left their firecrackers unattended while they went into another store nearby

The Plover community was organized in 1854 when the town of promising young Wisconsin native Isaac Wheeler settled on a large tract of land east of the Mississippi River. The town was named for Plover, England, where Wheeler had been born in 1824. He and his family moved to what is now Plover in 1855, and started a cattle business. In 1861, the town saw its first settlers arrive from Illinois with the United States Civil War as part of General Grant's army. When the war ended, many soldiers returned home, and new families began moving into Plover. In 1872, Isaac Wheeler's son-in-law John Waddell bought 1,200 acres (500 hectares) around what is now downtown Plover from Abram Beavers. This area became known as "Wadsworth." Waddell built a small log cabin here that he called "The White House." He later donated this cabin and other property to the town for use as a park. The Wadsworth Park Association was formed in 1903 to manage this land. Plover experienced rapid growth during World War II due to its strategic location at the crossroads of two major highways: US Highway 3 and Interstate 94. Many businesses were located here including Ford Motor Company, Chrysler Corporation, Standard Oil Company and more than 50 other companies which produced products that were shipped all over America. The post-war years were difficult for the community as economic development slowed down but never stopped; by 1970 there were 8 businesses operating out of downtown PlOVER with an additional dozen or so residents working in these businesses day and night! In 1990s local resident Tom Kerenz purchased much of Wadsworth Park Association property which included parts of downtown PlOVER expanding it into what is today known as Waterfront Plaza; Kerenz developed this area into one of Milwaukee's most vibrant shopping districts full of restaurants, shops and galleries - one that remains largely unchanged since its inception!
