Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin is a small town in the rural area of Door County, Wisconsin. The population was 1,691 at the 2010 census. Pleasant Prairie is part of the La Crosse-Elyria, WI Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Pleasant Prairie were three families who came from Illinois in 1847: John and Sarah Goodspeed and their two children, Anna and George Goodspeed. They built a log cabin on a bend in the river near where they lived today. When they left Illinois, they took with them all of their belongings plus much of what they had gathered around them during their travels—including plants and wildflowers that still grow there today. The Goodspeeds began growing crops such as corn and beans on their farmstead for themselves and others who came to trade with them during the early days of this settlement. By 1860, when Prohibition made liquor illegal in America, some residents had moved away from agriculture because it didn’t offer enough money to support them anymore. Some others stayed behind to continue farming; by 1870 there were six farms in operation within one mile of Pleasant Prairie center. In 1871 James Matson founded Appleton Manufacturing Company located east of town on State Highway 11 (now I-94) between Racine and Appleton. The company became one of the largest textile manufacturers in America with over 100 employees at its peak producing clothing for both men and women throughout most parts of North America including Canada and Mexico City. Matson also started construction on what would become known as “the Big House” which housed his factory until his death in 1919.
