This company operated their baking operations out of two buildings on North Main Street from 1951-1976; these buildings were demolished and replaced by modern facilities during the early 2000s when M&M decided to move their baking operations out of state into Illinois due to declining sales levels there. The town of Platteville was founded in 1836 by the brothers Solomon and David Platte. The platting of the land began soon after, with a few small parcels being sold off to settlers. By 1840, most of the area around Platteville had been bought and platted by entrepreneurs John Dickey and James Graham. It wasn't until 1845 that the first school building was erected in Platteville, named for Reverend Amos G. Tuttle. By 1850, more than twenty homes had been built in what is now downtown Platteville. In 1865, controversy erupted over a proposed road through central Platteville that would run parallel to the railroad tracks and cross near the town square. A group of local merchants and farmers organized themselves into a protest Committee to prevent the road from being built. After several months of peaceful protests, on October 26th 1865 a detachment of United States cavalry arrived at town square and began dispersing the protestors. The men were arrested and brought before military judge Captain Prentice for contempt of court; however, due to their peaceful resistance they were eventually released without charge. In 1870, a new school building was constructed in downtown Platteville thanks to financial support from Mr. Tuttle's widow Anna (née Cook). The first students attending this new school were taught by Mrs. Cook herself within two years; she also served as principal for many years thereafter until her retirement in 1912-13). In 1875-76, platting continued northward along State Street towards present day Green Bay; this platting was done primarily because there was no other place available for farming or industry on such an expansive piece of land between Lake Superior and Wisconsin River - henceforth known as "the farm country".
