It became a town on December 2, 1865 when it amalgamated with neighboring Clear Lake to form the Town of Plattville. Platteville is a small town in the town of Calumet City, in the Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. It was originally settled by German immigrants in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The population was 589 at the 2010 census. The community name originated from a plat map of the area that was prepared by surveyor John S. Platt for his employer, Abraham Lincoln & Company. The plat included land that later became part of what is now Platteville. The first settler to arrive in what is now Platteville was Peter Kappenhagen in 1851. He built a cabin on the site that still stands today. Other early settlers were Heinrich Voigt (1853-1928), Gottlieb Schneider (1855-1934), Johann Friedrich Schrader (1858-1944), Wilhelm Weber (1860-1945), Julius Hirschberger (1862-1929) and Jacob Weiser (1865-1927). In 1872, pioneer Jonas Wirth purchased 2/3 of acreage east of present day Elm Street from Hiram Bingham for $800 cash and then platted it into townsite known as "Wirth's Prairie". Wirth named his new community after his brother Philip Witthuhn who had emigrated to America some years earlier from Germany with his family. In 1875, he donated additional land to make up for lost property when Partridge Station was founded nearby on Long Lake Rd.. A post office called Plateau opened in 1876 and remained open until 1899; it was renamed Woodbury in 1901 when it merged with nearby Calumet City post office. The first store located in Platteville was Bruno's grocery store which operated from 1877 until 1896 when it closed because of financial problems caused byetta competition from other stores within town limits ia also responsible for laying out most of present day Elm Street . After leaving Plateau, Bruno reopened at 7 N Main St., which would remain open until 1978 when it closed again due to lack of business . Two other stores followed suit before remaining open until they too closed around 1990: Ladd's Hardware Store at 12 N Main St., which continued operations until 1992; and Smithy's Ice Cream Shop at 6 E Main St., which also ceased operations around 1990 . One final store, Lowes Hardware Store at 9 N Main St., lasted until 2001 before ceasing operations altogether . A few years later all but one business within town limits folded due to economic reasons including an increase number o competitors making Calumet City less affordable than ever before while local residents voted not to annex their village creating an unincorporated community known as "Platteville" Seminole Township outside town limits
Platteville was located on the east bank of the Wisconsin River, about south of Green Bay. It was founded in 1836 by George Washington Carver and his wife, Esther, as a farmstead on land that had been donated to them by the state of Wisconsin. The town grew rapidly during the 1840s and 1850s, thanks to its natural resources - especially lumber and farmland - as well as its location on the north-central border of Wisconsin. In 1855, Platteville became a city after voters passed an ordinance granting it municipal status. The city retains its rural character today.
