The origins of the Platteville Coast Guard are murky, but it is certain that the agency was founded in 1881. The first service members were recruited from Platteville’s civilian population and local militias. The Coast Guard existed until 1912 when it was merged into the Wisconsin State Police. In 1933, the Coast Guard was again created when the Wisconsin State Legislature passed a bill authorizing its creation statewide. The agency quickly grew and by 1938 had purchased its own boat fleet and began providing patrols along the Wisconsin shorelines. In 1949, the Coast Guard bought its first helicopter and has continued to allocate helicopters to various patrols ever since. Today, the Coast Guard provides a wide range of services including investigation, search and rescue, coastal safety, law enforcement and public information operations.
