Pewaukee is a village in the town of Pewaukee, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,651 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The Village of Pewaukee was organized on July 1, 1854, from portions of the Town of West Allis. The first mayor and board were appointed by county officials and residents voted to form a Board of Education on November 3rd, 1855. On March 6th, 1861, the village became a city with a population of 710 people. On December 12th 1905, Mayor James Dickey announced that he would no longer run for reelection because he had been married for only two months at that time and his wife also had children who were then young adults. He recommended his successor John Fenton to take over as Mayor effective January 1st 1906. Mr. Dickey left office with much regret having served only two short terms in this important post and leaving behind such an accomplished community as Pewaukee which enjoyed many years without major turmoil or interruption until World War II when rationing caused great distress and economic destruction among its citizens

The name "Pewaukee" is likely derived from Potawatomi word "waukesha". The first settlement in Pewaukee was founded by Peter and Paul Wagoner on December 6, 1853, as part of the Town of Greenfield. On July 8, 1854, Greenfield merged with Pewaukee to form the new town of Pewaukee. In 1865, when Milwaukee County was organized, Pewaukee became one of its original towns. In 1905, Pewaukee voters ratified a resolution proposing that the name be changed to "Waukesha", after then-Governor John Peconinny's wife Hilda (née Wagoner). The change took effect on October 1st that year. In 1907–08 there were two tornadoes in central Wisconsin which killed six people and injured many more; both tornadoes were rated EF3 on intensity scale by National Weather Service officials at their time. Both events are considered to have been caused by severe thunderstorms which developed over Iowa and struck these areas very hard due to reflectivity changes from high humidity levels
