The name of the town is derived from the Potawatomi word pewee which means "place where we build." The Town of Pewaukee was organized in 1856 and named after Samuel Wirths, an early settler. The first store in town was built on Adams Street in 1858. In 1902, the village of Pewaukee merged with the towns of West Allis and Brookfield to form the city of Milwaukee. In 1976, Pewaukee incorporated as a Village again. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 10,356 people, 4,971 households, and 3,711 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,834.0 people per square mile (621.3/km²). There were 5,145 housing units at an average density of 727.5 per square mile (269.8/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97% White,[1] 0% African American,[2] 0% Native American,[3] 2% Asian,[4][5][6][7] and 1% from two or more races.[8] Hispanic or Latinoof any race were 2%of all residents
