The first military engagement fought by the United States in the late 1800s was at Saginaw Heights, Michigan. The American Revolution began on April 22nd, 1775, when colonists in America rose up against British rule. On July 4th of that year, General George Washington and his army invaded Canada and drove the British out of Quebec. On November 5th, 1775, Washington's army entered Yorktown Heights and won a decisive victory over the British troops. This event is considered to be one of the greatest victories in American history. Since then, United States military forces have participated in many various wars throughout world. Today, there are more than 200 million Americans who are members of the military. On July 4th, 1806, President James K Polk signed into law the Mexican War Veterans Act which provided for free passage for US veteran soldiers and their families from Mexico to the US following its victory over Mexican forces at Vera Cruz on July 8th that year. During World War I (1914-18), America's participation ranged from neutrality to active participation; however, not all Americans were happy about this involvement given that they saw it as a war against Germany and Austria instead of a war for independence from Great Britain or Spain respectively. Nevertheless, many people across America donated goods and services to support their countrymen in Europe during wartime including members of Congress who travelled there with supplies and moneybags full of foodstuffs and munitions while also taking part in meetings where decisions were made about how best to fight European wars without getting involved on home soil - something that is still talked about today when considering gifts for Soldiers or Military veterans!
