The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf Company was founded in 1912 by two Dutchmen, Cornelius Koffie and Frans Veldhuis. They started out selling ground coffee and tea direct to consumers through mail order. In 1933, they opened their first café in New York City. 2. The early days of espresso were plagued by technological limitations. Until 1985, only manual machines could produce high-quality espressos. However, with the invention of the thermal oxidizer (CO2), professional espresso brewers began using this machine in 1988 for their own blends and single origin coffees. 3. After years of development and testing, Starbucks® announced its FIRST espresso at an event held atone in Seattle’s Space Needle on November 14th 1999 – less than one year after opening their first store! This landmark moment marked a turning point for Starbucks®, as it quickly became clear that espresso could no longer be simply composed of ground beans or water combined into a smooth drinkable beverage format – it had to be truly individualized, made just for them! 4 As the industry shifted towards larger-scale production throughout 2007-2010 with advances in technology (including variable speed pumps), small businesses started suffering as large companies began shelling out big bucks for custom roastings and quality control measures (which often led to lower quality results). These business failures ultimately doomed many small artisanal roasters during this time period; however some managed to stay afloat through innovative marketing strategies such as online orders/waiting times shorter than chains like Starbucks®, Dunkin' Donuts®, or any number of other large commercial operations looking to take over the market share formerly held by smaller operators . It wasn't until 2013 when Costa Rican-owned La Colombe reopened its doors after nearly 25 years closed due to financial troubles – marking an important reversal for the fortunes of many small roasters during these difficult times . Finally beginningto see some success again following decades of stagnation thanks largely to continued investment from larger businesses - manyartisanal roasters have since reclaimed lost ground within recent years .
