Flynn, Jr., set up shop at Oshkosh to provide training forAAF pilots and support services during the war. In 1946, the base was transferred to the United States Air Forces Europe (USAFE) and became operational as Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER). In 1957, USAFE moved to Kirtland AFB, New Mexico; however, Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson continued to be host facility for USAFE operations until its closure in 1995. From 1945 until it closed in 1995, Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson played an important role in AF aircraft operations all over North America. Many of the gifts given to AFB personnel during this time have still been with us today - including military vehicles and equipment such as fighter jets and bombers. Some of these items are now on display at AFM Museum located adjacent to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson within AFB grounds across from Highway 20 entrance. Other artifacts from this period include uniforms and insignia used by enlisted members of the U S Army's 5th Infantry Division stationed at JBER during World War II which are currently on display at Fort Riley Army Reserve Center near KS 85 outside Wichita Falls TX; Headquarters Squadron/Air Defense Command airfield control tower which once stood atop a hill overlooking JBER; P-38 Lightning fighters donated by Japan after World War II which were stored at Mather AFB CA until they were sent back home for use by USAF officers assigned to JBER during Korean Conflict; B-29 Superfortresses flown by RAF Bomber Command from RAF Mildenhall England after being stored at Incirlik AB Turkey following World War 2; Aircraft maintenance tools donated by various countries throughout postwar years including Australia who kept dozens of Boeing 707's parked on their airport property while also using them as Convair CVN passenger carriers; many pieces of equipment donated or leased by numerous airlines operating out of US airports prior to their closure - some still extant today! Despite its shutdown in 1995, JointBase Elmendorf Richardson has been involved constantly since then in different forms or function through retired service members' children taking ownership into their own hands when they reach adulthood. It is through this continuous activity that AFB has become not only maintainable but also iconic within American military aviation culture - something that can be seen every day when visitors come onto base!
