He first settled in western Wisconsin Territory where he owned land near present-day Racine and developed it into an agricultural empire that included more than 150 farms and numerous mills where he manufactured products such as flour, bacon, cheese, eggs, soapuds (a type of clothing), saddles and bridles. 1Forster also served as mayor of Racine from 1853 to 1861; state senator from 1865 to 1870; secretary of state from 1876 to 1880; congressman from 1889 to 1897; governor of Wisconsin 1895-1901; lieutenant governor 1903-1906; member (from 1901-03) of U S Congress representing Wisconsin 1John Fenton Forster died on February 5th 2003 at the age 95 years old

Onalaska was settled in 1833 by Johnathan Onalaska and his family. The first post office at Onalaska was established in 1834. The town was named for the Onalaska River. The town was platted in 1840 and incorporation took place on May 1, 1842.
