Onalaska, Wisconsin is a small town in the western part of the state of Wisconsin. It is bordered by La Crosse County to the east, Sheboygan County to the west and Menominee County to the north. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. The name Onalaska comes from one of two German words meaning "place where we found a rabbit" (or "a place with fresh water"). The first settler in Onalaska was John Helbling in 1851. Other early settlers were Peter Fenton and Jacob Kapp. In 1853, A.T.(Albert Tinney) opened up a general store in Onalaska which became an important local economic center for many years. In 1902, Onalaska had 2 churches- First Methodist and then Lutheran which remain active today as churches of their respective denominations. In 1905, during World War I, Onalaska served as an internment camp for American soldiers who had been captured or tried by the British military on Canadian soil. More than 3,000 American servicemen were detained here during that time period including many officers and men from Milwaukee's Milwaukie district who had volunteered for service in Europe but were sent home because of low morale among troops stationed there after unsuccessful attempts at contacting their families back home. Onalaska's economy changed significantly when Lake Michigan filled up with oil due to hydraulic fracturing techniques used in North America for oil production beginning in 2007. This new industry has created significant employment opportunities throughout central and southern WI since 2009; however, it also has caused some environmental concerns as wells have been drilled too deep into undersea resources underlying this area making it difficult to extract any oil or gas without causing environmental damage or even loss of life (see fracking safety controversies).
