Coffee has been a part of Onalaska, Wisconsin life for as long as people have had coffee. In the early 1800s, farmers in this area grew and processed coffee beans. Coffee was such an important crop that early Onalaska settlers placed a lot of importance on it. The first permanent settler in Onalaska was John Purdy, who arrived in 1837. He built a cabin on the current site of town and began to grow coffee. By 1840, Purdy had bought some land east of town and started to process his beans into coffee cups and filters. The Burlington Coffee Company was founded in 1892 by James Burton and his brothers-in-law Amos Noyes and George Ladd. They sold their coffee from three small shops located at 9th and Pine Streets in downtown Burlington. The company became very successful, growing to over 100 stores across the United States before going bankrupt in 1918. In 1932, businessman Donald Wohlgemuth purchased Burlington Coffee Company assets including its press plant and warehouse at 5th Street & State Road 43 in Onalaska. Wohlgemuth renamed the company Donny's Coffee Company after his son Donald Jr.'s favorite player (and future president) Dean Martin. Donny's soon became one of Wisconsin's largest retail businesses with operations throughout the state. In 1984, Wohlgemuth sold Donny's to Peet's Coffee Corporation for $1 billion dollars; Peet's is now the world’s largest coffee company with more than 150 million customers worldwide. One of Donny's most famous slogans was "With Peet’s you get what you need – quality without price." Donny's legacy continues today with five main branches - Milwaukee, Green Bay, Racine, Appleton (now Oshkosh), Andover - plus numerous drive thru locations around Wisconsin Rapids and Fond du Lac County townships he owned or controlled during his lifetime: Antrim (Albany), Bremen (Beloit), Cedarburg (New Berlin), Claremore (Clinton), Eau Claire (Emmonsville) - making him one of Wisconsin’s most popular retailers ever!

Onalaska, Wisconsin is a town in La Crosse County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,487 at the 2000 census. The village of Onalaska was incorporated in 1907 and dissolved in 1945. The town was named for Onatekwanonaghta (O-nuh-tuh-kwah-nuhh-tuh), an Ojibwa chief who had resided there since 1831. In 1867, when the U.S. Census counted La Crosse County's population for the first time, Onalaska had just 7 inhabitants; it grew rapidly thereafter as settlers arrived from Minnesota and other parts of the Northwestern United States. The couple continued production until Bob passed away in 1993 - an event that left Alice with more than just his death certificate to keep; she also inherited his patents for his inventions related to coffee production! 2) Cathy Ascoli was born in 1948 in Italy but spent her formative years living in Rome before moving permanently TO America when she was sixteen years old. After graduating from college with a degree in fine arts Cathy went into advertising and worked as a copywriter for several companies before landing her first job as an editorial assistant at The New York Times Magazine (later becoming assistant managing editor). While working at NYTAM Cathy met John Updike who would become one of her closest friends over the next thirty-nine years! Cathy eventually became managing editor at NYTimes Magazine herself but continue working side by side with John until his death in 2008! 3) Don Freeman founded Freeman Coffee Roasters Incorporated back in 1976 out of his garage following a stint as sales representative for Heublein Brewing Company (now part of Anheuser Busch).adinishingly,duringFreeman'sfirstyearofbusinessheonlymade$5 per month from market research alone! But despite these early struggles he kept pushing forward until he opened up shop on Morrissey Avenue near Wall Street - now known as Off Broadway Coffee & Cafe - serving delicious drip coffee ever since! 4) Kathy Tomasky was born December 3rd, 1959ophyouwenttohighschoolinSheffield United Kingdom with plans on becoming a biologist like your average everyday person but instead you end up with degrees from Oxford University and Columbia University (where you studied Chemistry!). After finding success as an author/co-hostess on various TV shows throughout America Kathy decided it was time move back home to England where she grew up – now based in London working as an English teacher Kelly has been teaching since 1985!!! Onalaska is a small town in the Milwaukee County, Wisconsin region. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of Milwaukee. Onalaska has been a part of the same community since 1852 when it was founded by Norwegian immigrants, and is now known as a historically Black township. The first white settlers in Onalaska were Norwegian immigrant farmers who arrived in 1851. They built their homes near where they currently live on Uptown Road. They started raising crops and livestock and traded goods with other farms in what is now the city of Milwaukee. The early residents were Methodists who established churches in Onalaska before moving to Waukesha County in 1856. In 1870, Methodists set up a school here and began to teach African Americans how to read and write. After years of struggle, they finally gained passage to America as free persons under President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation in 1865. In 1865, following General John Fetterman's Expedition against black insurrectionaries throughout Wisconsin – which involved burning down entire villages – many Norwegians settled in Onalaska because of American offers for land grants rather than see their black friends face punishment or displacement by whites living near them. The community's earliest pioneers included several women who had married American soldiers during the Civil War; these wives took up farming after reuniting with their husbands back home in Norway (the men had been discharged from service).
