Onalaska, Wisconsin is a town in Douglas County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 592 at the 2010 census. The town was named for Onalaska River. The first Europeans to visit Onalaska were French fur traders in the late 17th century. The first permanent settler in the area was James Fenton, who arrived around 1836. He founded a log cabin on the banks of the Onalaska River as part of a claim he made on behalf of his brother-in-law, John Bennett. Fenton and his family operated a gristmill and flour mill in Onalaska until 1881. In 1886, George Stephenson built the first electric streetcar line between Green Bay and Milwaukee along what is now State Highway 12 (now US Highway 12 Business). In 1907, Onalaska became an incorporated town with a library, post office and school district. It remained an unincorporated community until 1959 when it became part of Douglas County. In 1966, the towns of Manitowoc and Waukesha were merged into Douglas County; Onalaska remains within that county today. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. Onalaska is located at (46.560902,-87.817764). As of the census of 2010, there were 592 people residing in the town: 291 households out of which 38% had children underthe ageof eighteen living with them, 60% were married couples living together, 10% had a female householder with no husband present, and 20% were non-families; 24% of all households were made up of individuals and 8% had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older
