Onalaska, Wisconsin is a town in Douglas County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 5,510 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–Racine metropolitan area. Onalaska was founded in 1847 as a post office on the Racine River by John Green and his family. The first store in town was built by Green and his brother-in-law Abram Stratton. In 1852, Isaac Thomas opened the first school in Onalaska. The town was incorporated on April 15, 1865. Onalaska has a humid continental climate (Köppen "Dfb"), which means that most months have an average temperature range of about 7 degrees Celsius (−14 degrees Fahrenheit). Winters are cold but mild with occasional snowfalls; summers are warm and dry with frequent thunderstorms and high temperatures of 30°C (86°F).

In 1795, when the first U.S. Coast Guard was created, it consisted of only a single boat called “The Constitution” which was stationed at Newport News in Virginia. The first Coast Guard Station was established at Cape May, New Jersey in 1835 and by 1850, there were six stations located throughout the country. In 1912, Congress passed the Merchant Marine Act which created the Coast Guard Safety Administration which in turn created the National Defense Reserve Fleet (NDRF) to provide merchant mariners with emergency supplies and debris removal services during World War I and World War II. Since then, many different types of gift have been given to members of the Coast Guard as part of their service or appreciation program including ceremonial vessels such as Cutters Eagle and Dolphin, motorcycles/mobiles/uniforms/swords/guns, radios/cameras etcetera. Onalaska was founded by John Lyden and James Sargent in 1854 as a farmstead on the east side of the Kettle River. In 1858 it became an incorporated village.
