Onalaska, Wisconsin is a small town in the upper Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 3,070 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kalamazoo-Harrison County Micropolitan Statistical Area. The Onalaska Volunteer Infantry Regiment (OVI) was organized on October 25, 1862 at Onalaska by Colonel John H. Dickey and Lt. Colonel John S. Beattie from Muskegon Heights Volunteers and raised by men who had deserted to join General Ulysses S. Grant's army during the Civil War. The OVI served in various engagements throughout the war and was disbanded on September 1, 1865 at Fort Snelling, Minnesota after serving for only three months total; its members were mustered out as "discharged without honorable discharge". On July 9, 1885, an act approved by Congress provided that all veterans of Indian Wars in Wisconsin be enrolled with the National Guard Bureau and must furnish $5 per month until their benefits expire or until they reach full retirement age; these troops were known as "Wisconsoys" or "Wisconsin Highlanders". This enrollment resulted in what would become one of the most successful military recruitment drives in American history; within weeks of its creation, Wisconsoys had enlisted over 6,000 soldiers from across Wisconsin into the Union Army during the Spanish–American War The first unit to arrive in Onalaska was Company K (25th Infantry) of the WI Highlanders which landed on November 5th 1885 aboard USS Olympia off Sturgeon Bay Naval Base carrying ordnance supplies for General Stonington's Mexican Expeditionary Force

Onalaska, Wisconsin is a town located in the town of Plymouth in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. Onalaska is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–Eau Claire Metropolitan Statistical Area. Located on the Fox River and bordered by Waukesha to the east and Plymouth to the west, Onalaska is one of rural towns with a small-town feel that has been around for over 150 years. The post office was established in 1844 and has served residents since then. The first settler in what would become Onalaska arrived in 1837 from Denmark and named it "Oshkosh". In 1840, John Dickey erected a log cabin on land he had purchased from the Menomonee Sioux tribe for $2 per acre (about $ today). Dickey became an early grocery store owner in Onalaska and started selling goods such as flour, cheese, eggs and lumber from his store which opened in 1846. The first school was built in1847 by local resident Josephine Lauterbach. It burned down soon after but was rebuilt using money received from trade with neighboring towns such as Racine and Kenosha. In 1865, railroad construction began through central Wisconsin and Onalaska became one of many communities along the tracks developed as it passed through central Wisconsin. By 1870 there were three stores operating within walking distance of each other; two groceries (the Mercantile Exchange & Koppers), one millinery (the Dana Mill) as well as several residential homes including George Wetherbee's home which still stands today adjacent to URBAN TRANSIT bus stop #1 on State Highway 54 near mile marker 25 south outside Ofallakka." This area now includes much of downtown Plymouth with some remaining apartments/houses scattered throughout this heavily commercialized redevelopment area known locally simply as "Downtown". "In 1870 there were three stores operating within walking distance of each other; two groceries (the Mercantile Exchange & Koppers), one millinery (the Dana Mill) as well as several residential homes including George Wetherbee's home which still stands today adjacent to URBAN TRANSIT bus stop #1 on State Highway 54 near mile marker 25 south outside Ofallakka." These days you can find evidence of these older businesses all around Downtown – check out recent photos taken inside Oneonta’s old train station where most recently they restored circa 1905 passenger cars used during their service! Onalaska is a town in Sawyer County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 571 at the 2010 census. Onalaska was established in 1856 as a small log settlement on the current site of the town. The first post office was established in 1861, and the first store opened in 1872. It became a village in 1912. Onalaska is named for Lt. John Onalaska of rangers stationed at Green Bay during the Dakota-Lakota War of 1862-1863. In 1916, Onalaka had a population of 1,500 and began to grow rapidly due to its location near Lake Michigan and its access to Interstate 45. By 2000 it had reached 3,000 residents and became an official town within the city of Milwaukee.
Onalaska was first settled in 1836 by David Aspinall and his wife, Eliza. The town grew rapidly during the early 1840s, thanks to the fur trade. In 1846, Onalaska became a part of the newly formed state of Wisconsin. After the Statehood Act was passed in 1848, Onalaska saw rapid growth as businesses sprang up to support the new state. The town's population reached 10,000 by 1860, and it had swelled to over 30,000 by 1870. By 1920, Onalaska had become one of the most populous towns in Wisconsin. Thetown experienced significant economic decline during World War II due to postwar restrictions on Fur Trade activity; however, it has since regained some of its former prosperity.
