Onalaska, Wisconsin is located in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and is a town on the south shore of Lake Michigan. The population was 4,099 at the 2010 census. Onalaska was first settled by French farmers in 1833. It became a post office in 1836 and an objective of the United States Military Mission to Canada in 1842. Onalaska was incorporated as a city in 1893. The city boundaries were changed to encompass all of present-day Onalaska and Racine counties in 1901. The first permanent settler in Onalaska was Jean Baptiste de la Rivière, who arrived from Quebec on July 14, 1833 with his family and three oxen. La Rivière erected a log cabin on what is now Main Street near where he built his house today. He named the settlement "Onalaska" for Newfoundland's Head Harbour (now Labrador). In 1840, John Sisson settled here also with his family; he had come across Lake Superior from Green Bay via Chicago overland during the American Civil War days when US trains stopped at every military stop along the way to bring supplies back home to soldiers fighting on the side of Northern Ireland or Mexico City against Santa Anna's Mexican forces under General Don Armstrong! In 1846, George Washington Kinney purchased land east of town from owner François Lemaire for $2 per acre (the price then quadrupled due to inflation). Kinney decided not to make Onalaka his permanent residence but instead lived at Muskegon Heights until 1850 when he moved westward into Racine County where he founded Kinney ville (later Racine) about four miles west of present-day Onalaska on October 7th,1850 with 10 other men including himself! Kinney farmed there until 1865 when he sold out and began building several houses which are still standing today within sight of downtown Onalaka! It wasn't until 1870 that Gustavus Adolphus Cushing arrived from Minnesota via ship bringing many lumber resources needed for construction projects upstream including milling operations started downstream by local farmer Daniel Boone! In 1880 Cushing opened up much needed navigable water transportation through Marquette Strait between Manitowoc Harbor and Lake Michigan creating a new industry!! In 1902 Gertrude Swanson moved her household goods hither after quitting her job as an airport baggage handler at Milwaukee's international airport because she found it unsanitary conditions there! Swanson founded Swanson’s Wagon Workshops here making wagons/carts/trucks etc., before moving her businesses elsewhere beginning with our very own Swanson’s Carriage Workshops which remain open today manufacturing coaches, luggage trailers & more!!! These workshops have been handed down through successive generations starting with my grandmother Florence Swenson who has run them since 1978!!! Today we proudly celebrate our 125th anniversary year as one community united We would like to express our gratitude to all those that have contributed so greatly To this great place we call home Our memories go back long before organized sports or dances became popular Here were people who put their hearts into something they loved And often risked everything For what they believed In Children playing together by day And singing around night This is what made life worth living
