The United States Air Force has been providing air support to the people of Onalaska, Wisconsin since 1947. The Service is responsible for ensuring that our citizens have access to safe and secure airspace, conducting operations in support of national security missions, and operating more than 120 bases worldwide. In honor of its history and commitment to service, the United States Air Force donated a hangar at Ellington Airport in Onalaska in 2001. The gift was designed to help improve safety for the community by storing aircraft parts and equipment. The donation also provided training space for local firefighters and law enforcement officers. Since then, the United States Air Force has continued its support of Onalaska through donations from different branches of the Service. In 2016, the Service gifted a new hangar at Ladd-Peebles Airport which will be used for storage and maintenance of fighter jets and helicopters. This started out as simple notes left on aircraft during takeoffs and landings, but quickly grew into more elaborate ceremonies. One of the most famous Air Force gift history events took place in 1961 when President John F Kennedy presented General Curtis LeMay with a life-sized bronze bust of him. The bust had been created by sculptor Jay Lynch in tribute to LeMay's contributions to theAAF during World War II. The president also bestowed upon General Curtis Lemay an honorary commission in the USAF (Air Superiority) Branch. Since then, many other Generals have received special awards or promotions in recognition of their heroism and service within the USAF. Some examples include: General Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin Jr., who was awarded two Silver Stars for his role in Apollo 11; Admiral Chester Nimitz, who was made Commander-in-Chief Pacific Fleet; Lieutenant Colonel James "Jimmy" Webb, who became Command Pilot (CPG) of United States Air Forces Central Europe; and Major General Scott Browning, who became Commandant at West Point after serving as Superintendent at MGM Grand Hotel & Casino (now Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino).

Onalaska is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Racine metropolitan area. In 1851, Onalaska had a population of only two people and was organized as an unincorporated community. In 1870, John Prentice, a landowner in Onalaska, donated 640 acres (248 hectares) to the town for development into farmland and residential areas. The first store in Onalaska opened on Main Street in 1871 and the first school was built in 1872. The post office was established in 1881 and remains open today as the town's only institution of higher education; it offers degrees from arts and sciences programs as well as law and business courses. In 1907, Onalaska became one of fourteen towns within Racine County when that county was created from portions of Milwaukee County. In 1916, Racine annexed most of Elk Creek Township to form its new municipality; however, Onalaka remained unincorporated until that year because its residents wanted to keep their own government separate from those living within Racine's borders. In 1941, during World War II, many men from Onalaska worked on the USS "Wisconsin"s radar station at Port Washington Bayou near Sturgeon Bay – later known as Wiscasset Harbor – helping to detect Axis submarines before they could torpedo or sink American warships operating in nearby waters during the war effort. What followed are some of history's most famous moments: on November 11th 1943 - when Japanese Submarine I-15 sunk USS "Wisconsin" off Wiscasset Harbor; December 7th 1945 - when Vice Admiral Chester Nimitz relieved Admiral William S.] Turner III after victory over Japan at Leyte Gulf; August 15th 1954 - when Ulysses S.] Grant visited Onalasha for his inauguration ceremonies as Ulysses S.] Grant's second term president less than four months after he took office following his election victory over James K.] Polk
Onalaska, Wisconsin was founded by James Dooley in 1853. The town was named after the Onalaska River and its namesake, George Dooley. The first post office in Onalaska was established in 1854.
