Jannetty's Coffee House was open from 1870-1875 and served as the first grocery store in town. Oconomowoc, Wisconsin is a small town in southwestern Wisconsin on the banks of the Fox River. The population was 8,584 at the 2010 census. Oconomowoc is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–Eau Claire Combined Statistical Area (CSA). The name "Oconomowoc" meaning "settlement by two rivers" comes from nearby Menomonee and Racine Rivers. The first settler to arrive in what is now Oconomowoc was John Chappel in 1836. A post office called Oconomowoc was established in 1847, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1902. In 1851, Isaac Morse moved to what is now Oconomowoc from Menomonee County and founded a gristmill here. He also erected a store and started a school. By 1861, most of present-day Oconomowoc had been settled when George Wickersham arrived with his family from Illinois viathe Mississippi Riverboat Nauvoo during the American Civil War. Wickersham built a log cabin on current-day center island in the Fox River for himself and his family before moving downstream to build more permanent homes around 1865. At that time, only about one-third of present-day O economistswoca had bought land or were living near it; most residents worked on their farms or rented land out to others. In 1893, Charles Fenton purchased some land east of center island for $1 cash down and began building an addition to his home which became known as "Fenton's Island". That same year saw another milestone when Milwaukee electric light company founder Thomas Edison came through town and offered free lightbulbs to anyone who brought him a certificate of purchase; this led to increased business for Fenton's Island as people traveled up river for those lights! In 1907, local farmers formed the Agricultural Marketing District #2 (AMD2) which oversaw all agricultural production within its boundaries - including but not limited to oatmeal production! This district remains an important part of regional government today! Over time development has occurred along both sides of the Fox River - with downtown expanding rapidly northward while residential areas have grown southward - making today one continuous community with several distinct neighborhoods located throughout downtown core area: Old Town/Chapel Hill neighborhood along State Street(); First Ward neighborhood located between Second Avenue South & Third Street (); Graduate Hospital/Hospital District neighborhood located just west of Center Street (); Warehouse District neighborhood located northeast corner Fourth Avenue & Union Street (). Today there are many different types of businesses operating within Downtown Crossing – some dating back over 100 years It should be noted that overall economic conditions have changed dramatically since 1970 – with farming no longer being an dominant force within society nor do businesses rely heavily upon agriculture anymore; instead they are largely based elsewhere outside metropolitan Milwaukee County although there are still some rural families residing closeby!
