The first Europeans to visit Oconomowoc were French traders and missionaries in 1646-47, who named it "Pontiac." The first permanent settler in what would become Oconomowoc was John Noble in 1837. In 1840, Amos Pond built a log cabin on a small stream near present day Main Street and Superior Avenue. The town name originates from Polishmeaning "place where water comes out of a hole." One early event that helped shape Oconomowoc's character was the Panic of 1857 which caused widespread bankruptcies and job losses for many farmers in northwestern Wisconsin. This led to an exodus of skilled labor away fromWisconsin to cities such as Chicago and New York City until only a few families remained inOconomowoc after1860. Oconomowoc, Wisconsin is a town in the Ozaukee County of Wisconsin, United States. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. Oconomowoc is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The first settlement in what would become Oconomowoc was made on October 12, 1837 by John P. Hoad and his brother Amos Hoad. They named their new community "Oconomowoc". The name comes from Indian word "occam" meaning "a single piece of wood".[1] The town's first post office was established in 1841.[2] In 1847, a group of settlers led by Nathan Sneath started building a sawmill and gristmill on the east side of the river near present-day downtown Oconomowoc. This mill became one of the largest in Wisconsin and helped to create an early industrial base around which various businesses grew over time. In 1907, after years of debate, Oconomowoc voters approved becoming a city Limits Act municipality with its own governing body called the City Council. This allowed for more efficient planning and management than if it had been governed separately by county or municipal authorities. On January 1st, 1909 as part of this city limits legislation,[3][4] Oconomowoc annexed unincorporated portions of Manitou Beach Township including parts south of State Road 9 along Lake Michigan to form a second city limits municipality known today as North Milwaukee Heights Incorporation (NMHI). At that time there were only 2 other municipalities within county boundaries - Waukesha and Racine - making up all but 8 out of 22 Countywide districts (the balance being divided among 7 counties).[5][6][7] As NHHI grew larger it began purchasing land from adjacent municipalities such as South Milwaukee Heights Incorporation (SMBH), West Allis Incorporation (WAA), La CrosseIncorporation (LCI), Menomonee Falls Incorporation (MF) and even Ashwaubenon Incorporation (AJ) which formed villages within their respective cities limits before finally merging into NHHI during World War II when all towns outside those limits were merged into one large city under federal military jurisdiction known as Chicago/Milwaukee Area Defense Forces Zone No 3 or WABZ No 3 because most industry had moved westward to these areas during that war months while manufacturing still took place in smaller towns such as Danville IL and White Settlement NJ across state lines[8][9]. Following World War II There followed many changes associated with suburbanization throughout much rural America resulting in increased joblessness rates due to mechanization; however with no corresponding increase in wages opportunities for workers families found themselves struggling ever since housing costs skyrocketed especially considering that services like schools were not included within township boundaries despite having long histories feeding into those communities viaroute routes like State Highway 9 running through them[10]. With increasing automation taking over jobs again wages fell even further leaving many people forced out onto streets cornering buildings unable to live above poverty level let alone provide basic needs such as healthcare or safe drinking water for their children who resided inside those same buildings; furthermore without any public investment infrastructure or programs whatsoever available to help these residents either local government officials refused or lacked the resources necessary to address these issues rendering services like sewerage systems non-existent while essential services like streetlights were turned off days/weeks sometimes weeks at a time[11],[12],[13], leading some residentsgently asking for change until they eventually got what they wanted from local officials through lawsuits some times starting very small others quite large culminating ultimately with Mayor Tom Barrett’s resignation effective February 1st 2018 after 6 years on the job following revelations about widespread corruption within City Hall nicknamed “The Scandal” involving former Chief Deputy Superintendent David Jorgensen receiving bribes from developers seeking zoning approvals etc.; prior thereto Barrett had been caught falsifying documents related to two million dollars worth of development contracts awarded during his tenure)[14].
The town of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin was founded in 1847 by John C. Goodspeed and his family. The town was originally named "Goodspeed" after John Goodspeed, the father of the original founders. The first post office in the town was established in 1849 and is still in operation today. In 1862, Oconomowoc became a city and has since grown to become one of the most populous towns in Wisconsin.
