Oak Creek is a small town in the Milwaukee metropolitan area, located east of the city on Interstate 94. The population was 2,014 at the 2000 census. His products were later renamed Sylvania products after Sylvania Lighting Corporation bought him out in 1906-07. In 1925, pioneer industrialist Julius Rosenwald purchased land adjacent to his old sawmill site on West First Street for use as an industrial park including a power plant and large scale production of aluminum cans and other canned goods items (the now demolished Rosenwald Steel Works). Oak Creek is a town in Douglas County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 7,818 at the2010 census. The Oak Creek ZIP Code is 54609. The first permanent settler in what would become Oak Creek was John Dearborn in 1848. He and his family founded the town on the site of their present-day home. By 1860, there were twelve buildings in what would be called "theOriginal Town." By 1872, the population had increased to seventy-two people. In 1886, the town was renamed for General James Hurlbut after he helped lead American forces into Mexico during that country's war with Spain. In 1902, Oak Creek became a state park and has remained so ever since. In 1968, general development began near where the current high school stands on land owned by Waukesha County which later became part of Douglas County. This area now includes much of downtown Oak Creek as well as several small townships and villages within its boundaries such as Wausau and North Branch. In 1974 it was decided that new housing should be built northeast of town center instead of closer to shopping malls or other services that might affect local businesses located south of I-94/Upper State Road (Upper Arlington). As a result of this decision, most development along US Highway 94 took place away from downtown while developments closer to I-94 continued to take place east of downtown; today these are known collectively as East Douglas County although they include parts of both Downtown Oak Creek and South Park Meadows
