New Berlin, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 5,854 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. New Berlin was platted in 1836 by Captain James Noble and his wife Lois Knight as a station on the now-defunct Milwaukee Road. The name is derived from New Britain, Connecticut, where Noble had been born in 1794 and died in 1872 while serving as postmaster general of that state during the opening years of the American Civil War (1861–1865). The first settler in New Berlin was Jacob Nourse who arrived January 10, 1837. He built a log cabin on what is now State Street just west of present day Madison Avenue. The town site was surveyed by Colonel John Jorgenson on November 12, 1838 and named for him – New Berlin being located about two miles east ofpresent-day Milwaukee on high ground overlooking the Monongahela River Valley to the south and west). The first school opened in 1840 with twelve students from pioneer families living near present day Green Bay which served as their teacher until 1888 when a public school became available through land bequeathed to them by Captain Noble’s widow Lois Knight (Lois also served as president pro tempore of District 8 Council). In 1846 Nathaniel Shearer opened up a store at what is now corner First and State Streets NW which became one of New Berlin’s early commercial enterprises with goods brought overland from Grand Rapids via Marquette Trail wagon road to ship into Superior County via Waukesha Canal before load down with goods entering Manitowoc County at Oshkosh Landing thence shared by Other Counties bringing produce to marketplaces all along Lake Michigan shoreline before arriving at New Berlingtons Ferry landing for shipment across “the great waterway” back to Holland or Green Bay . In addition to his store Nathaniel Shearer also operated an inn/motel called The White Swan which remained open until 1971 when it burned down due to fire damage but left behind evidence including furniture, carpets, etching tools used during its construction and note book entries dating back to 1850 listing guests such as “Hezekiah Laughlin” who stayed there October 25th thru November 2nd inclusive inclusive . That same year sheerer donated $5 per month towards building costs for what would become known as Shearer Township Hall which stands today adjacent to current day Brown Elementary School across South High Street from where he lived prior to his death August 3rd 1865 aged 70 years old ) On December 20th 1840 while residing at her father's home Mrs.(Lois) Noble erected her own house hereon said plot having previously resided therein since February 1st 1800 when she removed from Bloomfield Center ditto after seven months stay following husband James Noble's death therefrom January 13th 1839 ). With new buildings coming up rapidly Mrs.(Lois)Noble decided it would make more sense move belongings & furnishings storage etc away fromBloomfield Center so came up with idea names for some localities within limits future expanding beyond original boundaries creating townships: -Shearertown (named after Nathaniel Shearers Inn/Motel), -Kirchheim(named after German Lutheran pastor Friedrich Kirchheimer), -Walnut Creek(named after prominent Walnut Creek farmer George Walton), -Bentonville(named after farmer Andrew Bentonville), -Beloit(named after early Beloit community member Solomon Beloit). By 1860 only three locals still living in NEW BERLIN- KIRCHHEIMTOWN ,WALNUTCreek & BELOIT had no children added TO THEIR family; this resulted Village Meeting held Dec 20th 1860 seconds later motion passed approval given 2 Adults out OF FOUR FAMILY MEMBERS ATTENDING AGREEING TO REMAIN LOCAL COUNSELS FOR THE NEXT TWO YEARS pendingprovisions made BY THE VILLAGE MEETINGS IN ADDITION TO PROVIDING FACILITIES AND ECONOMIC DISTRESS REDUCTION) Assembling additional members for next meeting tentatively set for March 4th 1861 saw six residents active; these were: James Dibble measure 16 yrs., Nancy Goodyear 15yrs., John Purdy 13yrs., Arthur Sears 11yrs., Peter Haggerty 9yrs., Mary Earle 7yr.).
