New Berlin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located about 20 miles north of Milwaukee on the Kenosha River. The population was 9,827 at the 2000 census. New Berlin is part of the Racine-Kenosha micropolitan area. The first permanent European settlement in what is now New Berlin was founded by fur traders in 1795 as Fort Snelling. The town developed around one railroad junction, and grew rapidly during the late 19th century because of its location near two major railroads and its access to factories and mills located in neighboring towns. The first post office opened in 1836, and by 1870 there were over 100 residents living in New Berlin. During World War II, New Berlin played a key role as an important manufacturing center for munitions production both within the United States and abroad. In 1943 it became headquarters for United States Strategic Bombing Survey (USSB), which conducted air raids over Japan to measure damage from strategic bombings during World War II. In 1945, following the war's end, New Berlin experienced rapid growth as thousands of veterans returned home and began searching for employment opportunities. By 1990, however, economic decline had begun to take hold and early predictions that the town would lose all its jobs by 2000 had come to pass; however, due to strong community activism local businesses have been able to remain solvent through recessionary times while still providing important services such as education and health care to their citizens
