Neenah, Wisconsin is a small town in the heart of the Great Lakes region. It was founded in 1836 by German settlers and has been a center of trade and culture for over 100 years. Neenah, Wisconsin is a town in Dodge County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. The name means "place where the nightingale sings." The first people to live in Neenah were the Chippewas. In 1836, settlers from Michigan moved into what is now Dodge County and named it after their new home state of Michigan. In 1837, John Stroud and five other men built a log cabin on the north side of present-day Lake Headwaters. The first post office in Dodge County was established in 1838 by Elisha Goodrich and Samuel Morse. In 1850, William Bowerman began developing land around today's Neenah Falls for farming use. He named his farm Parkland after President James Ketchum of Oregon who had died while on a visit to America that year. A post office called Parkland was established in1850 by Lijah Payne and Richard Fenton; it remained open until 1865 when it was renamed Mount Pleasant post office due to lack of an adjacent community with the same name (Mount Pleasant was located east of present-day Neenah). From 1871 until 1921, Rapids tavern served as the only store in town; it closed its doors for good in 1921 whenonsequential changes to Penfield's zoning code made retail stores illegal within city limits (Penfield became an incorporated village). After years of being one of the most important businesses downtown during prohibition Era Neenah transitioned from an agricultural center to a manufacturing center with production beginning at Rockford Germania Engine Works starting up in 1924 and continuing through World War II before ceasing operations completely during postwar reconstruction period; however some parts continued operation such as Wernher von Braun’s development company working on missiles at nearby White Sands Missile Range which ceased activities following war ended) In 1948 Dick Selvin opened his drive-in movie theater across from Main Street near High School which would be known as Selvin's Drive-in until its closure circa 2009 due primarily to budget cuts but also because many back then were not scared about Heights Childrens Hospital opening next door without given warning or any planning whatsoever - which happened without much fanfare either
