Muskego is a small town in Wisconsin, located on the Fox River. The Muskego community was established in 1853 and named for George Washington Muskegon, the first Governor of Michigan Territory. The first settlers to what is now Muskego arrived from Michigan in 1833. They were led by Captain John Dibble and his wife Sarah Jane Dibble and their three children: John (17), Mary (15), and Josephine (10). The area that would become Muskego was surveyed by Nathan Kapp in 1840 and it was decided that the river should be called Fox because of its abundance of foxes. In 1865, when Congress passed the Morrill Act which provided for land grants to states within Nebraska Territory, they also passed legislation giving muskets to all citizens over 21 years old who owned them. This act made Muskego one of the few towns in Wisconsin where guns could be owned by all citizens regardless of race or color. When Milwaukee County formed in 1836, part of it included territory that would later become Muskego County. When Milwaukee County was divided into two counties – Milwaukee County west of the Mississippi River and Racine County east –muskelogo Landrum Township lay within Racine County east of Milwaukee County line - thus becoming part of only that one county though it geographically belonged to both!
