Muskego, Wisconsin is a small town in the east side of Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 797 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–West Allis metropolitan area. Muskego is located on the west bank of the Menomonee River and has a total area of 18 square miles. The first people to live in Muskego were Native Americans who hunted game near the river. The first permanent settler was John Fitch in 1836. In 1840, Hiram Stevens founded Waukesha County and named it for his home village in Scotland, which he had visited while on a business trip to that country. In 1846, Muskego became part of Waukesha County too and was renamed for Jens Ludvigsen (1780-1856), an early Danish settler who had come to America in 1824 as an employee of Lars Christensen & Co., merchants at what is now downtown Milwaukee. He owned land around present day Muskego Lake and built a log cabin there about 1835-36; it still stands today. In 1862, James Gorman came to Muskego from Green Bay and opened a grocery store on Main Street corner with First street (now Superior Avenue). This store continued to be open until 1923 when it closed due to competition from local stores operated by Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) members Walmart and Safeway. Gorman's grandson Fred Gorman started the original Kwik-E-Mart on West Second Street in 1965 which continues as one ofWisconsin's largest supermarket chains operating over 350 stores statewide including 60 locations inside Wisconsin State Fairgrounds between July 1st – September 30th each year! In 1969, Dutchtown Dairy began production at Kilgore Farms which remained operation until 1984 when it went out of business due to lack of market demand for their products after being price gouged by other dairy companies! After Kilgore Farms closed, Dutchtown Dairy merged with Schleicher’s Creamery producing similar products but under different ownership until 1984 when they finally merged intoMilwaukee based Kraft Food Incorporated! That same year saw also opening another new grocery store located south side off I-94 just past White Settlement Road known as “The Fresh Market” continuing until its closure in 2003 due to low sales volume combined with changing consumer preferences associated with online shopping! The first permanent settler in Muskego was John Prentiss, who arrived in 1838. He and his wife Esther also founded a gristmill on the east side of town in 1840. Prentiss and his wife were buried at Muskego Cemetery. In 1851, 300 land grants were given to residents of Muskego by Governor Julius Cargill. The first post office was established inMuskego in 1854. In 1870, the town voted to become an separate county and had its own sheriff and justice system until it merged with Douglas County in 1904. The first school for white children opened inMuskego on December 5th, 1861. The district became known as “Farmington Township” after Farmington School District No 279 disbanded in 1957 when that township became part of Racine County
In 1851, the town of Muskego was platted and named for the muskox which were then being hunted in the area. The first post office was established in Muskego on March 12, 1851. In 1865, the townsite of Muskegoh was organized and became a separate municipality.
