Mount Pleasant is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the east side of the Fox River. The population was 3,501 at the 2010 census. Mount Pleasant is part of the Milwaukee–West Allis Metropolitan Area and is included in the Milwaukee-Wisconsin Rapids metropolitan area. The first European settlers in what is now Mount Pleasant were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1673 as part of a fur trading expedition led by Hendrick Corstiaensen. They named their new village after Pieter Postel, an early director of Dutch West India Company efforts to colonize what are now Ontario and Quebec provinces in North America. The first white settler in Mount Pleasant was John Doane, who arrived about 1768 with his family from New York City. Doane built a log cabin on the banks of the Fox River and began farming land around it. He also constructed a gristmill that he used for grinding flour for local merchants and sold water rights to customers along the river. By 1801, Doane had founded what would become Mount Pleasant Township and started selling lands west of his cabin to settlers seeking tractors, lumber, etc., which allowed him to expand his operation greatly and become one of early township leaders. In 1824, John Atherton purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) northwest of Doane's farm from him and laid out a town site on high ground near present-day Wauwatosa or White Earth Creek Boulevard between Wauwatosa Lake Road northbound (now US MediaRoute 6) and Menomonee Falls Road southbound (now I-94). Atherton called his town "Athertonville" but it later became known as Mount Pleasant because its founders had namesake properties thereabouts within miles of one another including Athertonville Heights on Linden Avenue just east of present day Niles Drive eastbound (now Slinger Street). Mountpleasant's Town Hall was completed in 1828 by contractor Nathan Hale & Son with brick work done by Daniel Haines & Sons.. In 1830 Samuel Hubbard opened up shop here as a druggist/pharmacist before moving into general merchandise store building at Fourth Street corner First Avenue NW two years later which he operated until 1865 when he closed shop due to consolidation across many businesses taking place throughout Milwaukee County during this time In 1850 Augustus Sherer bought Sherer's Store from Hubbard; she ran it until 1886 when it burned down leaving only her initials remaining above door shown today beside Second Avenue NE where she lived until her death . On October 9th 1854 James Cushing married Emma Ladd at Third Presbyterian Church - South side lot next door to Mrs Sheerer; they moved into their own house soon afterwards adjacent lot across from current home on First Avenue NE . This marked end days for Mrs Sheerer’s business as secondhand goods continued coming through her front window until 1889 when fire destroyed entire block neighboring homes including hers finally putting an end to operations following more than 30 years
