Monroe is a town in Green Bay County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area and is the county seat of Green Bay. The first post office in Monroe was established on June 8, 1853.
Monroe was a small town in the northwestern corner of Wisconsin on the east side of the Mississippi River. The town was founded in 1854 by General James Monaghan and his brother, Colonel John Monaghan. The town was named after General Monroe, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and had been appointed inspector general of U.S. military forces in California. The first store in Monroe opened in 1855, and there were only three other stores when it closed its doors in 1912. Around 1908 there were ninety-six people living in Monroetown and around 1916 there were only thirty-eight people living there. In 1927, a post office called Monroe was established at the intersection of State Highway 57 and County Road 806. The original post office building still stands today at 515 Main Street; it has been added to the National Register of Historic Places since 1978. In 1922, Monroe became a village according to state law; it officially changed its name to Monroe Township on November 1, 1924. On January 1, 1925, following township approval by referendum (with almost unanimous support), a new high school was built with funds raised through local sales tax initiatives; that same year also saw the opening of the first telephone line between Monroe and La Crosse Rapids via wire service. The present day high school is located just northwest of town along CR 724A
