Monroe is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located in the Driftless Area of the Upper Midwest. The population was 5,771 at the 2010 census. Monroe is one of three towns in Winnebago County that are part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Monroe was Abram Roscoe and his family who arrived on December 26, 1843 from New York City aboard the brig "Natchez". They made their way westward through Iowa and Nebraska before reaching what is now Monroe on November 9, 1845. The Rosoches were among the earliest to cultivate land in this area and soon had several buildings erected including a gristmill and store. The community started out as a small village with just 10 residents but quickly grew into an important stop on stagecoach routes between Milwaukee and St Paul, Minnesota. The town got its name from General James Monnett who fought for United States during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). In 1857, when Winnebago County was organized, Monroe became part of it and remains its legal capital to this day. In 1860, Monroe received its first telephone line which allowed for better communication within the community than had been possible before. One of Mike Szeliga’s early businesses was selling ice cream from his truck around town square until he opened his own stand near Center Street in 1922 after purchasing an old Dairy Queen from local farmer Harry Wirths. At that time there were few places outside of Milwaukee where you could get good quality ice cream without leaving your car or homebase; today’s Gristmill Square Shopping Center offers similar services albeit at much lower prices thanks to advances in technology! Monroe also saw some significant growth during World War II when many new homes were built to accommodate military personnel stationed hereabouts at Camp Robinson (later Fort Snelling) and other nearby facilities such as Rock Island Arsenal Ammunition Plant #1 and #2…….. Together they produced over 350 jobs directly or indirectly while providing living quarters for thousands more American servicemen during what has come to be known as “The Great Migration” - people seeking opportunities far away from war-torn Europe & Asia…. After war came peace which brought increased opportunity but also increased crime rates due to mass migration away from hometowns hit hard by economic depression….. Hurricane Katrina visited Monroe late last year followed by high winds & flooding which caused extensive damage across all 3 communities….. In recent years things have stabilized somewhat with hope for continued growth thanks largely to investment by both private individuals & government entities led by HUD……… Today there are over 6200 residents living within easy reach of everything that makes life interesting here – shopping malls full of clothes, restaurants close at night so you can sleep soundly knowing your food isn't contributing any pollution……………. A visit here is always---------A great reminder that sometimes good things happen when you least expect them!
Monroe was founded in 1836 by James Monroe and his wife, Varina. The town grew quickly, becoming a major stop on the Milwaukee River Railroad. In 1854, Monroe became the capital of Wisconsin Territory.
