The United States Navy deployed a gift to Middleton, Wisconsin on December 7th, 1944 in an event known as the “Christmas present from the sea”. Middleton is a town in the towns of Spooner and Lancaster in southwestern Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,548 at the 2010 census. Middleton was founded by George Washington Middleton on December 12, 1836. It became a city in 1907. Middleton is named after Colonel George Washington Middleton who settled there in 1836. The first European settlers to what is now Middleton were Frenchmen who arrived from Canada around 1763. They built the first permanent house on the present site of town in 1836 and called it "Le Haut-de-France". In 1840, another group of Frenchmen arrived and established their own sawmill on the river's edge just north of town. These early pioneers were followed by English arrivals in 1850, when Henry Raymond bought land east of town and started farming. The Raymonds would become major landowners throughout much of Northwestern Wisconsin until they sold most of their land to others during the Great Depression. In 1869, General Dodge sent troops to help settle a claim near present day Spooner after learning that an Indian tribe had been living there for several years without getting permission from either side This event helped lead to Wisconsin's annexation by the United States as part of her Treaty with France following its victory over Mexico at Buena Vista (1846). As part of this agreement, France ceded all but 3 percent of her North American territory west of the Mississippi River to America including present day Midwestern Wisconsin In 1902, Middleton became home to one half mile (1 km) wide boulevard which ran from downtown through Agricultural Park south to Spooner Avenue . Boulevard Day also celebrated here every year since then - something that still occurs today as Boulevard Day Parade & Festival . AfterWisconsin Rapids Railroad pulled out its tracks starting passenger service in 1957 many people abandoned their farms looking for new opportunities closer to big cities such as Milwaukee or Madison However today some farmers continue operations using railroads as transportation
