Middleton is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 5,462 at the 2010 census, down from 6,052 at the 2000 census. Middleton is part of the Waukesha County seat and it is located in south-central Wisconsin on both sides of the Fox River. Middleton was platted in 1847 by farmers who were coming back from a trip to Illinois and Michigan. It was named for John Middleton, an Englishman who had come overland from Canada in 1836 and built a cabin near what is now Middleton Junction. In 1853, lumber baron Nicholas Biddle founded a sawmill here, which continued to be run until 1961. Other early businesses included a shoe store and a farm Baptist Church (now also gone). The town grew rapidly during World War II as soldiers came home to find new homes and businesses opened up around them. In 1945, Middleton became one of six towns within Waukesha County that joined together to form the newly created Milwaukee–Waukesha metropolitan area; it has since grown even more through annexations by other municipalities. The post office operated here until 1959; today only street addresses are still used there and there is no mail service or ZIP code. Today's economy relies heavily on trade unions such as those that represented workers at nearby Boeing plant; cultural amenities like nightlife or music venues abound; and educational institutions include two universities (one private), two high schools (one public), three small colleges/universities (including one with satellite campuses), ten thousand jobs in manufacturing, ninety-six thousand jobs in education and health care services, and five hundred miles of highways linking middle-class suburbs all across Milwaukee County. A history museum opened in 2002 dedicated to local history with exhibits about mills, industry, wars past and present including World War II efforts against Germany: "From Steel To Peace", "Milwaukee's Top Lumber Companies", "The Neighborhoods That Built Milwaukee" etc.; as well as displays on noteworthy people associated with Middleton during its various stages including John Middleton himself!
