Mequon is a town in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 17,752 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous community in Milwaukee County and the second-most populous in Wisconsin afterMilwaukee. Mequon is also one of the five towns that make up the city of Milwaukee. Mequon was platted on December 12, 1854 by John Pritzker and his brother Julius Pritzker. The first post office in Mequon was established on July 15, 1857. The site of present-day Mequon was part of the Grosse Pointe Indian Reservation until 1836 when it became part of what is now Racine County. Mequon started as an agricultural village with 4 farms and 12 families in 1874 when railroads were built through that area. By 1904 there were 25 businesses and over 200 residents; today there are only 10 businesses and about 75 residents. The original town fathers set up shop here to get away from bad weather back east where jobs were scarce during those days before industry took over economy for many years afterwards In 1915 Gustavus Adolphus Grammar School opened which became home to high school students from all over Milwaukee county including people who had been living near Waukesha or River Falls since their early childhoods such as Edwin Copley (1841–1924), editor of "The Milwaukee Sentinel" (1892–1994) who attended there from age 8; AVR Hennepin (1868–1948), son of Chicago lawyer George Hennepin; businessman Julius Kahn (1861–1945); Lillian Hellman (1915-2005) who wrote screenplays for "The Women's Revolution", "The Hours"and more; author Alice Bogan (1912-2010) born Bradley Beal Johnson; composer Leonard Bernstein ; artist Ted Sorensen ; public health officer Drs David Murchison, Maurice Sendak . Mequon is a town located in Mequon County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,719 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–West Allis metropolitan area. Mequon was first settled by Germans in 1849 and named after Meiningen, Germany. The town's first school was built in 1851. In 1854, Mequin (a name derived from German "meinig" meaning "to cut") became a village and it incorporated as a town on November 3, 1865. In 1907-08, Mequin annexed the neighboring towns of Pickering and Merton to form what would become an even larger community known asPickering-Merton Heights. On July 8, 1908, the towns of Greenfield and Washington were annexed to create what would eventually be known as Milwaukee Township with Mequon within its boundaries. On January 1st of 1990, Mequin became Abraham Lincoln High School District #8 when all but one high school in the township were consolidated into that district under one roof. The townsite was laid out in 1852 and named after Major General John Mequon, who served as a colonel in the Union army during the American Civil War. Mequon was platted on December 1, 1852 by Horatio Alger and James J. Hilliard. The first post office was established in Mequon on December 5, 1853. The name derived from Captain John Mequon (1792-1857), an officer of Company K, Fourth Regiment Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry who fought in the Mexican-American War and participated at Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma. In 1879, Mequon School District No. 2 merged with Racine School District No 4 to form Racine-Mequon School District No 1 which still exists today as one of Wisconsin's largest school districts with over 160 schools serving grades PreK thru 12th grade! In 1924 Racine-Mequon School District No 1 merged with Milwaukee Public Schools to form Milwaukee super district!
