Mequon is a town in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. The village of Mequon was incorporated in 1871 and merged into Mequon in 1925. Mequon is located east of Milwaukee on the north side of the river Menomonee. The first settlers to what would become Mequon were Dutch Americans who arrived from New Netherland in 1634. They founded a trading post on the west bank of the Menomonee River and named it Grooteboomen after their home country. The Post Office was established in 1795 and continued operations until 1836 when it was discontinued because of the American Revolution. The town site was surveyed by George Hennepin in 1824 and received its present name from General John Fetterman, commander of U.S forces at Chicago during the war for independence (1812-1815). Fetterman had been born in Germany but immigrated to America as an infant and became a naturalized citizen in 1817. He served as captain under General Winfield Scott during the Mexican War (1846-48). In 1830 he started construction on what later became known as Fetterman's Dam which provided water power for his millinery company and other businesses along with creating many jobs for local residents including grist mills, breweries, sawmills, cheese factories, pigs/cows operation, etc.. Fetterman's Mill burned down on November 25th 1888 while operated by his son William Fetterman Jr.. It remains one of Milwaukee County's most famous landmarks with an observation tower that offers a great view of downtownMilwaukee included below since 1960s In 1851 Wisconsin State Assemblymember Nicholas Schoenaerts proposed amendments to laws governing townships that would have changed how towns were created within existing rural boundaries without actually changing any township borders - this proposal became known as Town Act No. 2 or "The Schoenaerts Amendment". Ultimately only two buildings remain standing from original Schoenaerts Addition: A Masonic hall now used as a restaurant called "The Lodge" next door to what is now White Castle fame across the street from where current Main Street crosses over Robert Mapplethorpe Road; also remnants of another building still standing today belonging to Gumbel & Sons grocery store which served lunchtime crowds up until 1957 before closing down due to high rents
Mequon was founded in 1866 by German immigrants. The town was named for John Mequon, a leader of the Wisconsin Republican Party. In 1905, the community became part of the city of Milwaukee. Milwaukee annexed Mequon in 1956.
