In 1865-1866, Mequon experienced its first major fire when four cannons belonging to Ft. Dearborn made an appearance on Market Street during festivities celebrating General Anthony Wayne’s victory over Rebel forces at Battle of Gettysburg (July 14th-15th). On November 5th 1860, Mayor Jens Petersen offered free GUNS (guns not yet registered) to any resident who could bring them down to City Hall for inspection underprivileged citizens were not allowed access to handguns or rifles at that time.) Mequon is a small town in Wisconsin, United States. It is the county seat of Mequon County. The population was 7,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee-Waukesha-Elyria metropolitan area. The first Europeans to Visit Mequon were fur traders from Quebec in 1792 and 1793 with their trading post on the Upper Kettle River. The first permanent European settler in Mequon was John Roemer, who arrived in 1823 and platted what would become known as Roemer's Landing on the west side of the Kettle River. In 1836, James Shields established Shields' Mills on current day State Road 54 south of present day Mequon Center. In 1857, Michael Reese establish Reese's Grove Farms northwest of Mequon Center (now east side of state road 54) which became one of America's leading dairy farms producing milk for local markets and export to Europe through his company Reese Dairy Products Incorporated (later renamed Kraft Foods). In 1916, Mequon had a population of 2,500 when it became an incorporated municipality under Wisconsin law; however by 1950 its population had increased to 10,000 due to migration from rural Pennsylvania and other parts of the Midwest during World War II. In 1957-1958 there was minor rioting associated with a proposed high school football game between neighboring towns Merton (10 miles north) and Appleton (25 miles east), both located in Racine County; this led to changing city ordinances which limited free speech rights for citizens within cities limits while allowing private schools within city limits use thereof for services such as physical education etc., until after 1959 when all public schools were required to serve all students regardless of race or creed although some residents continued to use privately maintained religious schools even though these laws were repealed by then Mayor Edward Jelinek following community outrage over what they saw as discrimination against black students at some whiteowned businesses such as Department stores etc.). The first post office in Mequon was established on July 3, 1858. The town was incorporated as a village on April 14, 1907. The city of Milwaukee annexed Mequon on May 25, 1912; however, the village retained its autonomy until it merged into the City of Milwaukee on January 1st of 1964. Prior to that date it was part of Racine Township. Mequon has experienced growth in recent decades as an agricultural center with crops such as corn and wheat production being major employers throughout the community. Manufacturing activities have also become more prominent over the years with manufacturing companies including Pabst Brewing Company and JBL Sound Incorporated having their origins here.
