The United States Air Force deploys gifts to residents of Mequon, Wisconsin every year. The USAF provides the gift baskets and delivers them to various locations in the town. This tradition began in 1947 when the United States Army stationed a military detachment in Mequon. The detachment was responsible for providing food and other supplies to local civilians. Over time, different branches of the US armed forces have participated in this annual community event includingthe Navy (1947-1948), Marines (1949-1959), Coast Guard (1960-1987), and Air Force (1988-present). This year’s edition features an ever growing range of items that are donated by individuals or businesses within Mequon Village Hall itself as well as from throughout southeastern Wisconsin! This includes everything from novelties like hot dogs and water balloons brought into town for the children during summertime festivities to more traditional offerings like home equity loans or car repairs. Mequon is a city in Wisconsin, United States. The population was 10,812 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Mequon County. The first European to visit what is now Mequon was French Captain Jacques Marquette in 1679. He named it "Mequon" after his home town of Mechelen, Belgium. The first permanent settler in what is now Mequon was Nicholas Wisniewski on November 20, 1837. He purchased land from Peter Slingerland and built a cabin on the north side of Presque Isle Lake for himself and his family. The village developed around Wisniewski's cabin until it became an incorporated municipality on February 14, 1847 with a population of just over five hundred residents. On March 25, 1858, the town voted to annex its neighboring village of Elkhart into Mequon Township as part of a larger highway expansion program that included the construction of State Highway 24 across southern Wisconsin (later Interstate 90). This annexation created one-third of current Mequon Township with a population size approaching two thousand residents while elbowing out other villages along the way such as Racine and Kenosha which had already established themselves within their respective townships. A post office called "Mequon" was established in 1857 but closed down in 1862 due to lack of mail service; the present-day spelling was chosen for convenience by postal officials since they did not know how else to spell "Mequon". In 1865, when state Senator Daniel Leland moved from Milwaukee to become Speaker pro tempore in the Wisconsin General Assembly and serve under then Governor John A.[k] Gifford (the only person ever elected statewide as both a Democrat and speaker pro tempore), he bought property northeast of downtown Milwaukee within what would eventually become MequON Township; this area now includes most parts of east Quarry Park neighborhood located near downtown Milwaukee proper - all this before any streets were laid out or zoning enacted! Mequon is a town in Door County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. Mequon is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–Eau Claire metropolitan area. The first European settler in what would become Mequon was Daniel Friesen in 1835. He and his family named their land "Friese's Prairie" after Daniel Friesen's father. In 1856, the family of Isaac Norris bought 640 acres (2 km²) of land east of the present day town line from John Prentice and others for $5 per acre. In 1857, Norwegian immigrant Sivert Pedersen donated 333 acres (117 ha) to Mequon Township as a gift for his wife's birthday and for general welfare. In 1865-1866, an Act of Congress provided support for agricultural development in Door County by authorizing expenditures up to $3,000 for survey work on vital highways leading into and out of county. This act also authorized the donation of 300 acres (121 ha) to Mequon Township as a farmstead site on State Road 10 west of downtown Milwaukee which became known as Norway Valley Road (). The new farmstead site is now home to Evergreen Gardens Park (), one mile north-northwest of where it once stood (). In 1867 when village incorporation was tried with three trustees chosen from each township within Door County, Mequon trustee Nathan Kappelman cast the only vote against incorporation because he did not believe that such an important community could be managed without centralized authority (). Mequon was founded in 1836 by a group of farmers who moved from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The town grew rapidly thanks to its location on the Fox River and its access to resources such as timber, water, and farmland. In 1851, the town name was changed to Mequon after General John Mequon who fought in the American Civil War. The Mequon Manufacturing Company was created in 1886 and is still in operation today. In 1912, Mequon became a city and has since grown into an important center for agriculture and industry.
