Menomonie, Wisconsin is a town in the eastern part of the state of Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. The Menomonie area was first settled by European Americans in 1836. It became a city in 1907 and was incorporated as a village in 1909. The name derived from Menomonee Indian word "mahonoke." The town has been populated by Germans since the early 1800s, when they immigrated to what is now Wisconsin from Germany. In 1836, German miners discovered an oil well near Menomonie and began to prospect for minerals. They arrived with their families and built homes on small parcels of land that they acquired from local Native American tribes. By 1840, there were over 100 German families living in Menomonie. In 1907, men from Menomonie organized themselves into a city under the leadership of Mayor John Dutton Jr.. The city grew rapidly due to its location at the junction of two railroads and its access to education and jobs opportunities. In 1916, Menomonie became one of 16 villages statewide created as part of the New Deal program promoted by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. With economic growth came new housing developments such as Riverside Court and Stadium Village which remain popular today among residents of Menomonie who enjoy easy access to amenities such as shopping malls and freeways within minutes’ walk or drive

In 1892, the men who were living in the Town of Menomonie organized themselves into the Village of Menomonie. This change allowed for more self-government within the village and allowed for better services such as public health care and infrastructure development. The village had a population of around 200 residents by 1922. In 1951, the village became an incorporated municipality with its own government and schools.
