Menomonie, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 4,814 at the 2010 census. Menomonie is located in the Menomonee County seat of Plymouth and is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The Town of Menomonie was organized on April 14, 1848, when a group of men from Sparta sold land to form a town. The first settler was Gideon Searcy who arrived in 1849 and built a cabin on what is now State Road 612 north of town. The first post office was established in 1850, and the first school opened in 1852. In 1854 a sawmill began operations, and by 1865 there were nine stores and twelve houses in town. In 1868 Menomonie had six schools; three churches served the community; two gristmills provided flour for local markets; one hotel accommodated up to sixty guests; and two barber shops catered to local needs including shaving products, hats, beards, ties and chaps (men's wear). During World War II Menomonie supported military operations with goods delivered by wagon train from Lisle to Plymouth via Mud Lake Valley Railroad on winter evenings during December 1943-February 1944 as part of "Operation Crossroads". According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. The Illinois-Indiana border ran through what is nowWI; Neosho County was ceded to Iowa Territory on April 25,1846 which included present day WI; Kansas Territory gained territory east of Missouri River on November 15th 1850 which included present day WI; Wyoming acquired land east of Colorada River on July 6th 1861 which includes present day WI; On March 20th 1863, Nebraska Territory was created from all parts westward including present day WI including Green Bay! The Menomonee had lived there since time immemorial while other groups such as Cherokee had moved into central and southern Minnesota before descending south along with other Native American groups into what are todayWisconSsettlements (present day NE MN). Thereafter they continued their travel upstream until they reached an area near where modern-day Waukesha County stands today called “Milwaukie Harbor” about eleven miles upriver from where we stand today! Hereupon several small villages were founded soon thereafter including one known as Neshonihaska or “the Place Where Great Fish Live” situated immediately offshore from current-day Waukesha County Landing Site! It should be noted that this location would have been well within swim distance for any human being at any time during his lifetime! In addition to these numerous village sites various hunting camps were established throughout western WisCONN because game could not be easily attained anywhere else outside those immediate confines! As time passed more areas were added thereby resulting in our current split between Dane & Winnebago Counties? even though these two counties encompass only about 26% Of MiLLANDMONEE COUNTY TOTAL LAND ! On July 1, 1851, Menomonie was incorporated as a town in the Dodge County, Wisconsin Territory. The town's first postmaster was J. H. Neuman. On March 15, 1857, Menomonie had its first census and it had a population of ten residents. In 1870 Menomonie had a population of seventy-six residents and on October 12, 1880 the town had a population of one hundred thirty five residents. In 1893 Menomonie voted to become an independent city and on November 3, 1893 it did so with a population of six hundred fifty four inhabitants.
