Gourmet Coffee in Menomonie, Wisconsin began as a small coffee shop on the corner of Main Street and State Street. In 1911, Harry J. Smith opened his first café in Menomonie with some of the first coffee beans from Africa. He continued to serve quality coffee until he closed his business in 1978. From then on, Gourmet Coffee became a popular local landmark and also served as a source for education about the history and taste of coffee. The cafe was saved by former owner Dick Forster who restored it to its original look and feel in 1984. The Menomonie Coffee Company was founded in 1914 by seven men who pooled their money to start a small business. The coffee was grinded fresh and served hot from the company's own two-story, red-brick building on the corner of First and Wisconsin Streets. In 1978, the Menomonie Coffee Company merged with the Milwaukee Coffee Company to form the present day Milwaukee-based company, Starbucks.
Menomonie, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 1,653 at the 2010 census. Menomonie is located on the Menomonee River, about 8 miles (13 km) south of Oshkosh and 11 miles (16 km) north of Green Bay. It is part of the Appleton-Eau Claire metropolitan area. The village of Menomonie was platted in 1836 by John Fitch and David Janssens as a result of a land grant from James Kappes, Sr.. The first post office was established in 1837, and the town took its name from Menomonie Lake which it crossed under the Kappes Bridge in 1852. The town's first school was built in 1851; it replaced an earlier log cabin school which had been destroyed by a fire. In 1863, Menomonie became one of four towns within Shawano County to be merged into Appleton Township; this merger resulted in an increase in population to over 10,000 people by 1880. In 1906, Menomonie became one of seventeen towns within Fox Cities National Bank District; this district served all ten counties within Shawano County with its headquarters located in Appleton. At that time it had a population size approaching 25,000 people and included many small villages such as White Earth Falls and Pittsford Hills as well as major settlements like Waukesha and Oshkosh which were then considered separate municipalities with their own governments but were now part of Fox Cities National Bank District including Menonomoine itself). With increased truck traffic during World War II due to defense production at two nearby airfields (Manitowoc Army Airfield #2 & Wisner Army Airfield), men began working on new homes east of town beginning around 1945 or so when there were no more open lots west of town for sale or development other than rural areas adjacent to those airfields where housing developments continued until very recently particularly near Manitowoc Airport where there are still some old military buildings used today for storage/repair activities etc.. Some men also started farming after they got drafted into service beginning around 1945-46 especially along Highway 12 between Manitowoc & Wausau where most farms today are still established including several hundred acres along that highway currently being developed into retail/residential space primarily using natural gas fired heating systems etc... It should also be noted that certain aspects surrounding everyday life here such as religion/spirituality have always been important here particularly among older residents who continue to practice traditional Native American religions such as Bearpaw Sioux Nation Tribal Council’s Elder Wolf shamanism classifies “meno” meaning water essence or spirit energy while “nomi” means earth element or physical body etc., these days typically conducted either through personal visits from elders or sometimes live demonstrations attended by local kids or tourists during various festivals held throughout the year outside even larger venues like Green Bay State Fairgrounds etc.) Accordingly there has always been significance attached both historically and presently to what goes on here everyday regardless if you happen to be living hereabouts or not LOL

However, the town experienced significant decline in popularity during the 20th century due to a number of factors including heavy factoryization in the area and an influx of refugees from World War I. however, today Menomonie is an important center for culture and commerce in northwestern Wisconsin. In recent decades, there has been efforts to revive the town through various initiatives such as restoration of lost buildings and promotion of local history museums.
The Menomonie area was first settled by the Potawatomi in the late 18th century. The area became part of the United States in 1854 and was named for General James Menomonee. The town was incorporated in 1868.
