Menomonie is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the Menomonee River. As of the 2010 census, the population was 9,204. The name Menomonie comes from Menomonee Indian Chief Weemsonson's homecoming party and means "place where many people gather." The first inhabitants of what is now Menomonie were Potawatomi Indians. In 1836, United States troops burned down Weemsons' village and all but destroyed his lodge there in order to drive him out of the area. The resulting Treaty of Fort Dearborn resulted in formal land ownership by both sides and spelled out that any future Native American settlements must be abandoned within a certain radius around Milwaukee; this included Menomonie. In 1851, when Milwaukee was incorporated as a city, Menomonie became part of Milwaukee County (it remained an unincorporated community until January 1, 1904). In 1896, it became a city again when its boundaries were redrawn based on population growth within city limits rather than via referendum as they had been prior to that date. In 1920s men brought pigs to market and raised crops there during good years while women did laundry at home during bad years; this helped support local families through tough times. In 1957 Menomonie made national headlines when residents successfully petitioned for incorporation into Lawton-Wichita Falls metropolitan area which would have added 2 million more people to the Twin Cities area then existed at that time; however incorporation never happened as War Eagle Conference Corporation (later known as Wichita Falls Regional Airport Authority) bought up all the petitions in question just before their deadline expired Today Menomonie rests largely within its own community with only a few scattered businesses outside its borders; although it has seen some changes over those years including becoming one of only two towns in WI with e-commerce capabilities
