The population of Menasha grew rapidly during the early 1900s, reaching 100,000 by 1910. The city was incorporated in 1912 and quickly became one of Wisconsin's largest cities. Today, Menasha is a thriving community with a diverse cultural heritage and a rich history. The first inhabitants of Menasha were Native Americans who hunted game near the confluence of the Menasha and White Rivers. In 1847, fur traders from Canada arrived in town to trade with local tribes. By 1850, many settlers had come to the area, including Simeon Chappell and his brother George Chappell Sr., who built a log cabin on what is now First Street. By 1860, there were over 25 families living in Menasha. In 1903, Dodge County was created from portions of Brown and Waukesha counties. The new county had two primary purposes: to provide law enforcement services for newly formed counties and to administer land grants that had been given out following settler arrivals. In 1916, when Dodge County became part of Racine County through an act of the legislature, it also gained jurisdiction over all of present-day Milwaukee County (except for part of Milwaukee). During World War I (1914-18), Menasha served as an important military supply center due to its location at the junction between two major highways leading into Illinois and Wisconsin Territory (then called Dakota Territory). As supplies dwindled after 1918's battle at Ypres Heights near Verdun in Belgium*, men started harvesting wood near what is now Second Street*—one source says “men chopped down trees right where they stood”*—and selling bundles of logs across town square.* This saw milling lumber played an important role in economic development throughout much of 20th century America; it shuttered in 1978 but has been reborn as Heritage Lumber & Mfg Co., which still operates today.* On July 1st 1915 – just days before America entered World War I – Mayor Aiken opened up shop at 318 N Main Street *in downtownMenasha*. After more than 10 years working opposite each other at Racine Manufacturers Warehouse Company on State Avenue*, Mayor Aiken & Store Manager Jens Klinge opened their own storefront together on Main Street!
