Gourmet Coffee History in Menasha, Wisconsin began with the first coffee shop in the town of Menasha, WI on October 6th, 1896. The store was located at 5 N Main Street and sold coffee from a small roaster. It is believed that the first customer was an American named George Washington who purchased a cup of coffee from the shop. The business grew rapidly and by 1912 there were six stores in Menasha serving customers from throughout Milwaukee County. On December 11th, 1912, the company merged with two other businesses to form Gopher Coffee Corp. At this time, Gopher Coffee Corporation had twelve stores across Wisconsin and Illinois. By 1922, Gopher Coffee Corp had become one of America’s leading coffee companies with over seventy-five stores across thirty-six states. In 1926 they acquired the Stagline Brewing Company which made them one of the largest brewers of java in North America. Outside of Wisconsin they also operated breweries in Illinois (Napa Valley) and Michigan (Dearborn). However their biggest success came during World War II when they produced more than 350 million cups of coffee for troops overseas. In 1949 Gopher Coffee Corp went bankrupt and was replaced by what is now Starbucks Corporation

Menasha was platted on October 3, 1854, by James P. Barber and James H. Goodspeed. Heading east from downtown La Crosse on U.S. Highway 54 about 12 miles (19 km), the town soon became known for its lumber mills and other agricultural products which it exports to other states and countries. The community rapidly grew due to its location along a rail line serving both local and export customers as well as logging and manufacturing industries which were based in Menasha until the early 21st century when these businesses have all moved away or closed down completely leaving the smalltown feeling more isolated than ever before The downtown business district remains an important economic engine with several restaurants and a variety of stores providing services such as banking, health care, retail shopping and professional services including accounting, law enforcement/security, carpentry/ Builder's Mate fame among others In recent years Menasha has seen some development with new construction taking place around Main Street including a Children's Museum opened in fall of 2016 adjacent to what used to be the old high school; new apartments being built just off US 54 within walking distance of most residents while still preserving many of the historic details; increased visitation by visitors from out-of-state resulting in addition of several streetlights that had been hidden during regular daylight hours since they generated too much glare for those living near them Overall though Menasha feels like it is slowly slipping back into obscurity although there are always initiatives underway trying to keep things active such as special events put on throughout the year or even occasional appearances by visiting dignitaries who stop by during their travels through central Wisconsin
