Marshfield is a town in Outagamie County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,326 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Outagamie County. The first Europeans to come to Marshfield were French traders and missionaries who journeyed through the area in 1814. They named the town after Colonel Nicholas Marsh of Vermont, who had traveled through these parts several years earlier on his way home from exploring Canada. Most of the early settlers in Marshfield came from eastern Pennsylvania and New York State. A group of them moved westward from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, in 1836 and settled near present-day Emmett Park in Outagamie County. The first store was opened in Marshalltown by James Wickersham on November 12, 1837. In 1840, John Hargrave founded what would become village hall and also became one of the earliest farmers in Marshfield with 8 acres (3 hectares). By 1845 there were 20 farms with 160 people living here; by 1850 there were over 400 persons living here. Marshfield got its name from Nicholas Marsh (1804–1868), who served as colonel in the Vermont militia during the American Civil War and later donated land for a school district that now includes much of downtown Marshfield. When he died childless at age 78 years old, his estate went to his nephews Charles Hammond (1848–1912) and George Prentice Hammond (1851–1940). In 1857 Daniel Cady organized a wagon trade along this stretch of route du Lac called "The Great Western Trail." This trade ran between Chicago downriver to Prairie du Chien upriver to Duluth then back downriver again across open water to Fort Worth where goods could be shipped off to Europe or Asia. Cady's trading post attracted some German immigrants who built a small business around it before it was destroyed by flooding about 1910; however most Germans left their businesses behind when they migrated north into other areas such as Racine and Green Bay during this time period On July 5, 1870 Anthony Jourdain burned an ore train crossing White River just northwest of modern-day Marshfield while trying to get intelligence on gold deposits being reported farther upriver valley Some 25 people were killed including eight children aboard that particular train . Marshal Field Post Office was established at this location on October 9th 1870 . The building still stands today next door to what used to be Denny's restaurant
