Marshfield is located near Lake Michigan and has a humid continental climate with cold winters and hot summers. The first people to live in Marshfield were the Potawatomi Indians who lived there for many years. The town was founded on November 12, 1849 by Capt. John Pohlmeyer and his wife, Sarah Bowers, after they bought land from the Sac and Fox Nation for $200. The first store was built on Main Street and it served as the town's center until 1857 when a new courthouse was built which also housed the town's first school. The next year saw another store built on Second Avenue which served as the city's main business district until 1860 when a new flour mill was built that became known as "the flour capital of America." In 1875, Marshfield incorporated as a village under the name of West Allis and had its first election that year. Over time, various industries have come to call Marshfield their home including agriculture (flour milling being one of them), manufacturing (a wide variety of products being made here such as radios, TVs, autos etc.), service businesses (such as restaurant/cafeteria ownership), real estate development (including several high-rise buildings in downtown marshfield) and tourism (particularly centered around nearby Lake Michigan). Marshfield is a town in Brown County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,848 at the 2010 census. The core of the town is located within the city of Marshfield and it has a population of about 18,000 people as of 2019. The first settlement in this area was made on the west bank of the Koshkon River by sawyers in 1854. A post office was established in Marshfield on October 5, 1857, and remained in operation until December 1, 1865. Before statehood, Marshfield was part of Waukesha County. It became a separate town on January 15, 1908. The name change came about because most of what is now Marshfield was then included in Waukesha County and its original namesake had been removed to make way for other settlements when that county was organized into State of Wisconsin (it still remains a part of Brown County). Marshfield is a city in the northwestern corner of Wisconsin, United States. The population was 30,298 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Waukesha County. The name Marshfield comes from one of four towns in Green Bay County which were named for General George Washington and his soldiers: Marshfield Heights, Marshfield Village, and Marshfield Township. The first settlers in what is now Marshfield arrived in 1834 when Daniel Boone crossed the state line from Kentucky into this area. A post office called Green Bay was established in 1836, and by 1840 it had developed into a small town with a population of about 100 people. By 1870, however, the community had shrunk to just 10 residents due to various factors such as railroad construction nearby and competition from larger communities like Milwaukee. In 1892, Marshall Fields opened up along the Menomonee River east of present-day Marshfield on land that had been donated by James Fenton. This agricultural center continued to grow until World War II when most of the farming region was turned over to industry due to new technology developments like synthetic oil production and other technological advances that swept through America during that time period.
