Marshfield is a town in the Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. Marshfield was founded in 1836 by farmers who were attracted to the fertile land along the Menomonee River. The town was named after Major General John Marsh and his family who settled there in 1837. The first store and post office were established in 1840. The first school was built in 1841. In 1865, Marshal married Anna Jensdottir, which led to a new wave of settlement in that area and throughout Ozaukee County by Norwegian-Americans fleeing religious persecution during World War I. By 1870, all but one of the original settlers had died from natural causes or war-related causes; however, a few families continued to live and raise crops until about 1930 when most of the residents left for good because of economic problems related to farmingtowns outside of Milwaukee's borders becoming more plentiful due to improved transportation systems and other changes within Wisconsin during that time period
