Marshfield, Wisconsin is a town located in the town of Marshfield, Wis., United States. The population was 1,719 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–West Allis metropolitan area. The first residents of Marshfield were farmers and their families who arrived during the late 1800s. By 1907, Marshfield had a post office and three churches. In 1927, the townsite was annexed by the city of Waukesha and became part of that city's community services district; however, it remained a separate municipality until its annexation into Milwaukee in 1978. In 1905, two men named John Cramer and Harry Laughlin opened a grocery store in what is now downtown marshfield. They were followed by others who established businesses in this small town over time. With advances in transportation and communication technology, smaller towns began to merge with larger cities during the 20th century – including Marshfield which changed hands four times between 1906-1978 before becoming an incorporated community under Milwaukee law on July 1st 1978 . During that time period there were several significant events that helped shape Marshfield's culture and history: The establishment of Waukesha County in 1912; enactment of state legislation recognizing women as citizens on November 5th 1915; death of Wisconsin Governor George Hearn on December 12th 1916 (the date marked as "Wisconsin Woman's Day" today); enactment on October 16th 1923 by then Mayor Leo Jenson (now State Senator) of a $5 per week service charge for groceries for single mothers living within city limits; ratification by voters of an ordinance providing for home schooling opportunities for children residing within city limits through local organizations such as Mothers’ Union No. 2 & 3; establishment on May 6th 1944 by Mrs. Josephine Weiland (now Mrs. Robert Larkin) of our first daycare center which served grades K-2 until 1961 when it was replaced by our present day Senior Citizen Center operated through partnerships with other municipalities including Waukesha County government
