The town was founded by Norwegian immigrants in 1849, and the first navy ship to come to the port was the brigantine USS Stevens in 1861. In 1924, Marinette became home to Naval Air Station Severna Park, which would remain an important naval base until it closed in 1979. The rotation of ships continued with USS Porter (1920-1927) and USS Hancock (1945-1946). In 1951, Marinette responded to President Truman's call for military assistance in South Korea. Onboard USS Pueblo (BB 63) were Marines from Company F stationed at Inchon Harbor. As part of Operation Neptune's Spear - one of the largest amphibious operations ever mounted - Marines from Pueblo boarded boats filled with supplies and troops disembarked at Inchon Harbor early morning on September 15th 1951 ready to assault North Korean positions ashore! Marinette is a small town in Wisconsin that has been around since the 1800s. It is known for its cheese, apples, and lumber industries. The town is located in the northwestern corner of the state and it borders Menomonee Falls to the north, Racine to the east, and Milwaukee to the south. The population was 553 at the 2010 census. The village of Marinette was founded in 1837 by Danish immigrants who had come to America looking for a new home. The first settler was Lars Christensen, who built a log cabin on his farmstead. In 1839, another Dane named Poulsen arrived and startedumbering operations on what is now Park View Street. By 1850, there were twenty-four buildings in Marinette with a total population of seventy-two people. The cheese industry became prevalent in Marinette after German immigrants began arriving during World War I to work on munitions plants in other parts of Wisconsin. One early dairy farmer was Julius Weller who built two milk cows and four calves that he used to produce three kilograms (6 pounds) of cheese per day from 1917 until his death in 1934. After Weller’s death, his son took over his milk operation and continued production until 1955 when it was discontinued due to pasteurization regulations set by World War II military planners. For many years after World War II ended, Marinette remained an agricultural town with large dairies providing milk for local farms as well as export sales through local distributors such as Avera Foods Inc., which still operates out of an office building downtown today). However, over time more manufacturing activities began moving into Marinette including aluminum cans making their appearance on Park View Street in 1952; then paper products starting appearing around 1960; finally plasticsBeginning appearing around 1970 when Alcoa Company moved into an old mill along Park View Street near where Highway 22 crosses River Rd.).
