The National Guard in Marinette, Wisconsin was founded on November 1, 1815. At that time the area had a population of only about 300 people. The first unit of the Milwaukee Militia Company was organized on December 3, 1815. The National Guard saw its first action in 1818 when it was called to help suppress aadeadic riots in Racine. The National Guard served through the American Civil War and into Reconstruction. It played an important role in the war by providing military protection for local businesses and homes, as well as keeping troops stationed in the area until 1865 when they were transferred to Minnesota. After Reconstruction ended, many of the soldiers from Wisconsin went into other occupations such as law enforcement or farming. In 1934, the last unit of the Milwaukee Militia Company disbanded and all remaining members were turned over to federal control under General Order No. 521 which abolished volunteer militias throughout America. The National Guard has been a part of the United States since 1775. The first national guard units were raised in New York City on October 25, 1776. In 1811, Massachusetts organized its own militia and called upon New York to provide guards for its soldiers. This was followed by Rhode Island in 1815 and Connecticut in 1819. Each state founded its own unit but all eventually amalgamated into the National Guard. In 1918, President Woodrow Wilson authorized the activation of the military forces of each state as an emergency measure to support World War I efforts. This led to the establishment of the National Guard Bureau which began issuing regulations for formation and organization of Guardsmen on November 3, 1918. On December 15, 1918, president Wilson placed restrictions on military service by men over 21 years old because he feared that such service would lead to a draft war with Germany. As a result, only enlisted men could be activated for duty in time for World War I and these volunteers were known as “draft dodgers” or “rowdies” because they refused to register with authorities or serve without pay. When World War II began, most states had already mobilized their militias but New York did not join until September 1939 due to economic reasons (the city was still controlled by Great Britain). After Pearl Harbor attack on December 7th 1941, mobilization became mandatory throughout America and soon enough there were 1 million men under arms across fifty-six states across two branches of government: The Army Reserve (later renamed simply The National Guard) constituted almost half of all Americans between ages 21-40 years old; while The Marine Corps Force Auxiliary served as a reserve armory force that could be activated immediately when needed both domestically and abroad (this role lasted untilactivated during Vietnam). An additional 2 million citizens volunteered their services within six months after Pearl Harbor as part of what is sometimes referred to as “Operation Dixie” which aimed at expanding American munitions production overseasrsince early 1942 under Franklin D Roosevelt’s Executive Order 9293/42 which authorizes commanders in chief U.S Armed Forces “to requisition goods necessary for defense purposes from any country where such procurement can be done without unduly prejudicing competition from foreign imports” . This order also allowed commanders general authority over all armed forces located outside contiguous Continental United States except Alaska or Hawaii to requisition whatever materials they deemed necessary for defense purposes regardless if it met definition set forth in EO 9293/42 including materiel used by our Nazi ally Germany during WWII like aircraft parts and tanks! Once again civilians stepped up with donations ranging from food parcels to clothes lines long enough accommodate troops camped out along the Gulf Coast coastal towns ready amphibious landings! Ultimately this program resulted in more than 5 million pounds being acquired through Operation Dixie alone! Aftermath: With so many people volunteering their time during peacetime we might think that national guard gift history would have been much less active however Gift giving has actually become quite common among members of society onceagain demonstrating just how important community involvement is when it comes to supporting our nation!
