Marinette is a town in Douglas County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. The town is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha metropolitan area. It was incorporated on July 1, 1851. The Town of Marinette was platted by John Smeaton on March 11, 1847. He named it after his birthplace in England—Marinetown—which he had seen while on a visit to that country in 1846-47. At first only four people lived in the townsite: Smeaton and his two wives, Mrs. John Nichols and Mrs. Arthur Heckel; their three children: Anna Maria (1848-1912), Charles Augustus (1850-1925) and Minnie Jane (1853-1937). In 1870 there were 10 residents living in thetown limits when it became part of Douglas County; this number grew to 20 by 1880 due to new land purchases from neighboring townships as well as settlement by refugees from Civil War battles around Milwaukee who had fled to Marinette during that year's fighting between Union troops and Confederate soldiers. In 1900 there were 30 residents living in town boundaries when theyAgain increased to 40 by 1910 due to additions made to thetown limits by new landowners - these included farmers who had moved into what would become downtown Marinette from outlying farming areas following a milk boomlet which began developing shortly after Wisconsin statehood in 1848; these newcomers also brought with them their livestock and other implements of agriculture which soon helped define Marinette's early years as an agricultural center among Northwestern Wisconsin communities such as Racine and Green Bay. During World War II many German American citizens of nearby Waukesha joined the military during its early stages but ultimately decided not to return home once hostilities ceased because they could not support themselves financially without jobs or land available back home where they could live openly while serving our nation Owing largely to discriminatory practices practiced against them within our government throughout most of that time period...Many members of my family served honorably during World War II including my father—a veteran pilot with the U Federal Air Service assigned principally flying Liberators over Japan...He flew missions over Hiroshima before being shot down over Nagasaki on Aug 15th 1945 just days before Japan's surrender...A few weeks later I accompanied him across Japan onto those same grounds where he died suddenly just short of reaching his destination some 25 miles skyward about 2½ hours after takeoff from our base at Kasumigaseki near Kobe...I mustachieved exactly what he did not--to walk among those Ground Zero ruins where one out of every 100 Americans lost his life during all those atomic bomb tests! It became a town on December 5, 1903. The town was named for General James K. Polk and his wife, Mary Ann Shorten Polk (1814-1893). General Polk had fought in the Mexican–American War and been elected president on the ticket of party Whig George H.W. Bush. In 1836 the Oregon Trail passed through what is now Marinette and other nearby towns including Wausau and Stevens Point before reaching Milwaukee
